Character Name: Isabela
Series: Dragon Age II
Timeline: Pre-Endgame
Canon Resource Link: Here
Character Background: Isabela is first introduced as a NPC in Dragon Age Origins. Her role is slight there as she essentially only serves as a vehicle by which the player character may learn the Duelist specialization. However during this short period of interaction we learn several things about Isabela that do in fact go on to define her character in Dragon Age II. The first of these things is of course that she may be easy on the eyes but that she's no easy mark in battle. Indeed she is an expert combatant, obvious from the fact that she can teach the player character an entire specialization. But like any good pirate or rogue, she's got more than a few tricks up her sleeve. However she's not completely arbitrary or amoral; she's definitely got her own set of standards. For instance she's a damn good card player (and a damn good cheat at that) and won't even entertain the idea of teaching the player character her specialization unless their dexterity is such that he/she can best her at the table...

Or in bed. For her second defining trait turns out to be her sexuality. Isabela is a woman that unashamedly wields her sex for both pleasure and profit. Although some characters (i.e. Aveline) may jeer or poke fun at her promiscuous lifestyle, Isabela hardly bats an eye besides to fire back her own special brand of teasing. In fact she's prone to making her own naughty jokes about the seedier sides of life and doesn't shy away from the subject or her reputation in the slightest.

The last piece of information to be gleaned from her Dragon Age Origins appearance is (if her duelist specialization wasn't clue enough) that she's quite a bit more than your average two-bit swashbuckler. To put her legacy a little more into perspective, one needs only to consider that she is highly esteemed by one of the main party members (an accomplished assassin in his own right), and reverently referred to by him as "Queen of the Eastern Seas and the sharpest blade in Llomerryn." She is Captain of her own ship and crew and her only apparent purpose for being in town at the same time as the player character was to let her men fill up on supplies and pleasure themselves at the local brothel.

In Dragon Age II, Isabela's lot in life is considerably reduced although this isn't directly revealed until a much later stage in the game. She arrived in the city of Kirkwall after being shipwrecked. In a blatant throwback to her DAO appearance, the first time you meet Isabela is while she has herself embroiled in an outright brawl. Pursuing a friendship or a rivalry (and especially a romance) with her will slowly begin unraveling her rather tumultuous background history.

Long story short she was set to be smuggling human cargo but instead freed the slaves, putting her in hot water with the crime leader Castillon who she was working for at the time. Castillon was of course furious about this and decided to punish her by sending her after a valuable relic, which she succeeded in stealing. However she subsequently lost it in the shipwreck, while being pursued by an enemy dreadnought. These same enemies have a compound in Kirkwall which Isabela refuses to go near, always giving some fishy-sounding excuse and taking off from the party. The player character can accept her plea for help to get Castillon and his men off her back, wherein all of these details are learned. She ends up totally abandoning the party in the final hunt for the relic (a religious book) and may not ever return if the appropriate steps were not taken to secure her loyalty. However if the player character achieved a deep enough relationship with her, she will come back and hand over the book citing their influence as her moral compass for doing so. The player character must then have a one-on-one duel with the Arishok to avoid forfeiting her life. Later, when Castillon is out of the way her side story is able to come to a close.
